Abstract

What are characteristics of sign language mathematical terms? This question is explored using the example of Austrian Sign Language. Sign language is considered from a semiotic point of view, which refers to Peirce’s sign concept. In particular, the iconicity and indexicality of mathematical signatures are differentiated and illustrated in examples. The study is understood as basic research in order to explore the long-term relationship between sign language and learning mathematics and the possible influence of learning in sign language on mathematical conceptualization processes.
